When I fist signed up for the Elio I was driving a 17mpg high octane only car 50+ miles a day.
Now I have a Fiat 500 so I guess now I'll only save $10 a week. Oh well, the best laid plans....
That is $520 savings per year at $10 per month. That is the cost of auto insurance per year. But if you add in the difference in the car prices then it is a different story....
With the Fiat 500 starting at $16,845 MSRP that is a $10,045 difference from an Elio. The FIAT 500 delivers up to 31 city/40 highway mpg. That is about an average of 35.5 MPG. So at 12,000 miles per year, you will use 338.03 gals of fuel. With regular fuel average price at $2.62/gal, you will spend $885.63/yr in fuel cost. With the Elio fuel cost of 521.39, the Elio will save you $364.25/yr in fuel cost. Take the difference in price between the Fiat and the Elio of $10,045... you would have to keep the Fiat for 11.34 years to make up the difference in the price of the Elio. Or you can run the Elio 19.26 years for the price difference and fuel cost.

Ah, not quite, my 2015 Fiat was $14800, my current average is just shy of 36mpg combined. Gas here in NJ (where I work) is at $2.21 a gal.
That all being said, I don't really care as much, to me the current $20 a week in gas is nothing, I big lunch can be more than that. Really my Royal Enfield is getting like 75mph and it's less than $80 a year to insure. And come to think of it my kid will probably wind up with the Fiat (he is 14 now) so I would be driving it for only 2 more years anyway. Still, money is money so I will be happy when the Elio comes into play.

You are correct. I made that assumption and probably shouldn't have. If the desire is to limit the amount of oil consumed, then electric definitely helps there. One barrel of crude makes approximately 21 gallons of gas. That'll take 7 barrels of oil off the market each year or 12,000 miles. Again, I assume it must be to either save money or oil. It could be that they just like electric. I know I do. Heck, I'd be driving a Tesla every day if I could afford it!
Me too on the Tesla! I hope to be driving an EV one day to insure there is plenty of oil for everybody else, to save on fuel and maintenance costs (although battery replacement will eat up any savings), but primarily for the high performance INSANE MODE.

Note: I'm too old to have to think about an EV battery replacement.

the math forgot the calculation of the "wow" factor. If milage was the only concern of vehicle operation/costs/milage, we'd all be (as does most of the planet) driving very small efficient (read ugly) transportation.

My new Ford picked up last winter is giving me 40-41 MPG highway witch is 90% or what I drive. It sits most of the time I ride my motorcycles they give me 43-50 Mpg. $6,800+ for an ELIO will buy a lot of gas for either of my options.
For me it not just about the MPG it about the over all idea of the ELIO.

2015 Prius
The hybrid that started it all.
$24,200 starting msrp2
as shown $26,9852
51/48 est. mpg3

Nope. I didn't screw up.
My only point was that if one is going to compare the Prius to the base Elio in terms of cost savings over the long haul of ownership it may be fairer to compare the base Prius C at a $5000 less msrp, but whatever works. The Elio may turn out to be an & vehicle for a Prius Owner. I'm hoping for the RUCRAYZE's above mentioned WOW factor ride, which is neither the Elio or the Prius, but simply can't afford it.

40-50 mpg in a Ford PU? I find that really hard to believe.
Even Ford doesn't rate it that high; they put it at best 26 hwy http://www.greencarreports.com/news...-gasoline-trucks-but-ram-diesel-still-highest
So unless you're doing hypermilling I think you might want to recheck your mpg in that pickup.

Well, when I searched for the base Prius that is was pulled up. I'm not a Prius fan. It was only to compare, and still at almost $20K compared to $7k that is a huge WOW factor. I like the Elio for it's looks. I like the VW GX3 but not for inclement weather. The post was to compare fuel cost and value with all other things equal as mentioned.

Perhaps VW will enclose the GX3 or similar WOW concept when they see a wildly successful Elio when it hits the streets.
