Those straight sixes were anemic only because the stock log manifolds and tiny single barrel carb choked it to death. If you replace those with high flowing aftermarket parts and put on a decent 2 or 4 barrel carb and you can double the power.

Agreed; Ford made a 300 I6 that was just a stump puller, crappy acceleration, but all kinds of grunt for moving things.

300 was a brute strength truck motor, and a dang good one, this Chevy guy will argue that it may have been the only good motor FoMoCo ever built. That said, it's a whole different animal than the 200/240 passenger car sixes were.
