I just love the looks of Toyota's I-road. From what I read, it debuted 2013 as a concept "leaning" electric trike and is now being tested in Japanese and European roads! I can't find when they first started working on the concept but w/ almost unlimited resources at their disposal, they've created a more complex trike which could hit the market soon if not already.

What's my point? Our ELIO is not electric so no range anxiety there, it's a much simpler design, almost 50K reservationist say they like it and so are thousands more just waiting in the wing and ready to buy! So where's the investors? EM publicly admitted that the ELIO has big, lofty and ambitious goals and as much as I hate it coming from them, they're right, almost like saying yeah, we should have started small but we didn't realize funding will be an issue! Because if it wasn't, it would have hit our streets sooner than the I-road! "IF" positive results from the e-series tests does not result in ATVM loan approval and investors continued to be cautious, we could all end up waiting indefinitely! Strictly my opinion only.

Range anxiety, as you've pointed out, will keep ICE-powered vehicles in the mainstream for a while yet. Given how batteries degrade over time, I can only see myself driving/acquiring something with 200+ mile range for my typical 70-mile day (commute + lunch + errands).

The economics of transportation and a conservation agenda lead me to believe that projects like the Elio will continue to appear should this venture fail.

I totally agree w/ you 100% that's why it'll really be a very interesting year for EM! I do believe that they will way more money than what ATVM loan will provide if approved but it will get the production started to fulfill the first year reservations, I think!

I've been following the i-Road EV autoscooter as long as the Elio autocycle. Toyota is on their 4th Generation i-Road prototype and has a fleet of 40 test vehicles in last mile ride share programs, and recently completed testing for everyday use by average drivers summer of 2015. I expect, as a result of those user reviews, a 5th generation production prototype will be revealed soon. If available in the USA I would buy it in a heatbeat as an urban commuter for the sheer fun of the driving experience and use my Elio as a suburban commuter. A BUT to the AND vehicle..............I could drive the Elio, BUT since it's a short trip I'll take the i-Road instead.

Toyota has road toured the USA's auto Circuit Events and the i-Road has received amazing reviews by test drivers everywhere.

Does the iRoad have comparable safety features to the Elio - crumple zones, airbags, etc?

Top speed in Europe (due to restrictions on this catagory of vehicle) = 27.962mph
Top speed in Japan (to my knowledge, no restrictions) = 37.282mph
Range @ 18.641mph = 31.069 miles

HP (2.7 x 2) = 5.4 (The Briggs & Stratton on my walk-behind mower has 5)

Uh-huh. Right.

Seriously?

Yes, seriously. It may not meet your personal needs, but it will meet the needs of millions as a personal urban EV commuter and according to drivers the most fun driving experience they have had behind the wheel of any vehicle. You obviously aren't the market demographic Toyota is trying to reach with the i-Road autoscooter concept.
