Daily Report: Automakers Close to Widely Adopting Dashboard Tech From Google and Apple

  • Aaron M. Kessler and Brian X. Chen report.

But nowhere is that obsession playing out more immediately than in the battle to develop the next generation of cars’ dashboard systems. In the coming weeks and months, dealerships around the country will begin selling vehicles capable of running Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, or both.

The systems go far beyond currently available Bluetooth pairing for playing music or making a hands-free call, and allow for Google’s or Apple’s operating system to essentially take over the center screen and certain buttons within the car.

“Consumers have spoken,” said John Maddox, assistant director of the University of Michigan’s Mobility Transformation Center. “They expect to have coordination between their phone and their vehicle.”

Good article (I did read the whole thing) and it shows not every car maker is onboard with just these 2 systems. Fiat/Chrysler feel the one they currently have is already better.
This is where consumers will be tossed one more item to choose from when buying a car and a marketing war could go really crazy. Can you imagine a car ad that pushes that they have Google/Apple vs. something else? I can hear them already.
We can have the Betamax vs. VHS wars again; the one with the deepest pockets wins. :D

This is one reason why I wish more automakers would make available systems similar to what Continental has developed and which EM has already told us will be an option. The Continental AutoLinQ Mobile Infotainment System is simply software which runs on your smartphone and/or tablet and uses those devices as the core of the infotainment system. This makes it much easier to support multiple device operating systems and keeps the infotainment systems up to date which is an issue for many built-in infotainment systems which end up being out of date by the time they make it to market and are not very easy to update.
