No it did not. I always thought Honda was an innovator not a copy cat er.

The G1 was the first HYBRID exported to the US. The TOY came the next year IIRR.
I was at the G2 Insight unveiling in Torrance along with 24 other G1 owners. WE ALL complained that the G2 was called an INSIGHT, and it did look like a TOY PIR. Bottom line, they are to different cars, but both HYBRIDS.

I just imagine it in my head, a crowd of G1 Insight enthusiasts gathered around a covered mystery vehicle. They make a grandiose show of pulling back the covers... and... sad trombone "wah-wah-waaaaaaah"
