Elio Motors signs MoU with Automotive Fortune 500 OEM to Provide Powertrain; Projects $120 million Research and Development Cost Savings

    September 27, 2018
PHOENIX, Sept. 27, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Elio Motors, Inc. (OTCQB: ELIO), developer of the ultra-high-mileage, low-cost three-wheel Elio vehicle, announced that they had entered into a memorandum of understanding with a Fortune 500 OEM, to provide the engine foundation as part of a new powertrain for the Elio vehicle. Elio currently projects that the new powertrain will result in $120 million in research and development cost savings. The company is working with the engineering team at Roush to develop a new Elio prototype employing the OEM powertrain.

"Purchasing an OEM's existing powertrain has an enormous impact on the project, it helps both expedite the timeline, and it directly reduces our capital requirement by about $120 million dollars", said Elio Motors CEO, Paul Elio. "This powertrain will also greatly enhance the Elio's performance by nearly doubling its horsepower while still maintaining class-leading fuel economy at an affordable ultra-low price."

Roush will integrate the new powertrain into Elio's prototype in order to begin preliminary testing procedures. These testing procedures will prepare the Elio for production, which will occur at the Elio Motors manufacturing facility in Shreveport, Louisiana.

The new powertrain will push the Elio's performance specifications far beyond prior consumer expectations. The engine should offer nearly a 100% increase in horsepower rating when compared to initial Elio prototype vehicles. When combined with the Elio's low curb weight, the new powertrain is expected to deliver excellent driver response and a highly improved acceleration time. Even with the Elio's substantial increase in performance, the advanced technology in the new powertrain should enable Elio Motors to achieve their promise of ultra-high fuel efficiency.

Holy Crap! I wonder how much that will hurt the mileage of the Elio. It'll definitely ramp up the fun factor though. They didn't mention what company or what motor they were going to use there. Any ideas? Guesses?

They said "the advanced technology in the new powertrain should enable Elio Motors to achieve their promise of ultra-high fuel efficiency."
Well,,, we know of two OEMs that have said they will stop building cars. So what are they going to do with those unused power trains?? and then there is Roush. I'm thinking FORD! eco boost 3 cyl!!
Notice they say powertrain. Which transaxle ?

This goes completely against what everyone has been saying for years. I wondered why they did not go with an OEM but for some reason the excuses were non stop. Things like, "Can't get an OEM to supply engines" were the norm. I assume everyone here will be extremely upset with this decision because the Elio engine was the only choice as all of the naysayers that kept claiming that Elio could use one of the numerous currently supplied 3 cylinder engines, obviously didn't know what they were talking about.

Now, Elio only needs $266M for production. Good job Paul, you finally figured out what we have all been telling you for many years.

Ot's an Aisin transmission. No different than what has been out for many years. So unless Elio does an about face on the transmission, it will only be what Elio has told us.

I liked this line "Elio's first manufacturing site will be in Shreveport, Louisiana."

I forgot Ford was going to stop making cars. I'm not sure how much engine capacity they'll have available because of the shift they are making to SUV/CUVs... There may not be much of a change in production numbers as they weren't selling many of the cars to begin with. Well, except the Mustang, that is. But, it IS an interesting thought and would be absolutely great news! Buy American, Ford engineering is well established, and it should be very reliable.

Ford's smallest engine is no longer found in the US as they aren't putting out small cars any longer:

    Engine: 1.0-liter 3-cylinder
    Power: 123-hp and 125 lb-ft of torque
    Transmission: 6-speed manual or automatic
EPA Fuel Economy (MPG): Manual: 30 City, 42 Highway, 35 Combined. Automatic: 28 City, 40 Highway, 32 Combined
Of course, the fuel economy is with the engine tuned for a much heavier vehicle.

You do realize that Ford is only going to stop selling cars in the US (except for the mustang). They build and sell lots of them for the RoW. In addition to that, Roush works with other manufacturers and not only Ford. Case in point:
    https://www.gmfleet.com/news/dominos-dxp-pizza-delivery-vehicle.html

If you are thinking ford, then the 70hp unit from the Fiesta in Germany, might be a logical choice at 5.2l/100km. Then there's the VW 60hp unit from the UP! in Germany that gives 4.2l/100km. Then there's the 80hp 1.6l TDI in the VW Polo that gives 3.8l/100km.

If I was Elio, I'd do the 1.6l TDI as it is leaps and bounds above any gasser and would get the Elio to 100 mpg if the current one gives 84. With being a TDI, a simple tuning box will give it an additional 30hp.

Even at 1,500 pounds, the Elio should be able to go 0-60 in just under 7 seconds. That's much better than the 10+ I was expecting. It might actually be downright sporty.
