Semi-trailers. I believe that a 53' trailer is the longest allowed on interstate highways. My brother the truck driver would know for sure.
Depends on the state; most of the time it's total length of truck and trailer is the measurement they address

Looks like the longest trailer allowed is 48' unless grandfathered in; they don't give the specifics on what "grandfathered in" is.

In Connecticut, they have this rule

"There are also some exceptions for 53-foot trailers. Why can a 53-trailer be operated without a permit when a 48-foot trailer with 1-foot overhang is illegal without a permit? Because 53-footers operate under the authority of CGS 14-262 with some very specific restrictions. The maximum allowable measurement from the center of the kingpin to the center of the rear-most axle in contact with the road cannot exceed 43 feet. The 43-foot measurement is critical: We estimate that 99% of the 53-foot violations involve an improper kingpin measurement. There are also route restrictions on where these trailers can travel (although the list of restricted routes gets shorter each year), and they are allowed to travel only 1 mile from the allowed routes for pick-up, delivery, repair, food, etc."

In Oregon they do allow triples (3 trailers) but they must carry a "Long Trailer" sign on the back; Washington only allows doubles; and I think California allows triples on Interstate Freeways, away from major cities (like LA)

As I remember, the rule in CA was 40' king pin to rear axle. The dollies under the van could be moved forward by unpinning them and backing the truck and van up with the trailer brakes locked. The pin holes are visible as you pass the trailers. The dollies would move forward to conform to the CA rule of 40'. My firm requested that all drivers move the dollies forward in AZ before entering CA. When I was driving, I was told that the rule existed so that the trucks with 53' vans could navigate the tight turns on CA approach ramps and city streets to the nearby drop lots without destroying the curbs and stop signs. I pulled a 53' dry van in all of the western US. I pulled 40' doubles in CA for 3 weeks. That was an unforgettable learning experience.

Not offered, option for additional charge, aftermarket only, to tow something voids warranty; for it to be towed something you'll have to find elsewhere.
