Had an 81 Diesel Rabbit...couldn't even stall it...got stuck in the snow back put it neutral got out, pushed it and got back in :p...you want the narrowest possible tires with a high ground clearance for mud and snow. Just look at the old wagons do you EVER see a wagon with wide width wheels low-riding down a trail ? :micdrop:
Yup, I had an early Chevy Chevette, 2 Dr, 4 sp, 4banger, with stock wheels and tires, and the only time it would get stuck is in ice. Deep snow, wouldn't slow it down. Bought it for $250, put a master cylinder in it, and drove it for 4 years; when I sold it 4 years later, got $650 for it, and a piece of tape over the rear hatch lock so it wouldn't leak. Great little car, I just didn't need it any longer.

I got a 1980 Rabbit pickup Diesel for free in 1985. It had a broken a timing belt and that pretty much destroys the engine. I bought a complete brand new VW industrial engine from some place that advertised in Autoweek (remember when they had a huge classified ad section). It showed up for $1K shipped. The engine was the same as what was in it except for the intake manifold and throttle linkage (it was designed for a governor). Switched over those parts and put it in. That thing lasted 10 years and it would give 50 mpg on the highway without a problem. It rusted out and I sold it for $500. So, probably the best value ever and it had 155/80/13 tires on it. That thing never got stuck in the snow and I think I only put on 2 sets of tires on it (they were only around $40 each).

My wife learned to drive a stick on the 1982 Rabbit Diesel I got her when we were dating. I gave it to her (because her Ford Escort took a dump) and in two days, she was driving around without a problem. No instruction needed. She figured it out. I still have a Jetta TDI today and it's my beater car but still gives 52 on the highway no matter how you drive it. The Elio is supposed to replace that Jetta but thank goodness it still keeps chugging along after 20 years. I think it'll go another 10 without a problem and maybe by then, I can retire it when the Elio comes out.

My daily driver is a 82 Toyota Turbo Diesel Pickup that gets 30+mpg. Over 600,000 miles on it and goes like a bat out of he!!... makes me wonder at times why I even need my beautiful sour green Elio?
