I first heard of Elio about a year ago and thought it sounded like a great idea. Some time has passed and a few days ago it came up in conversation again. Immediately I started digging through all the information I could find about it, and have been very pleasantly surprised.
I know there's a lot of contention in the community at large on whether or not this thing is viable or will ever see the light of day, but I've reserved one. I figure I could take that same money to a casino and lose it for sure, or gamble it on a product that I find intriguing and would love to have in my driveway.
I'm a millenial and a programmer with no kids or pets, and I could certainly afford a much more expensive "normal" car, but everything about this vehicle speaks to me. I love an efficient, unexpected approach and a new solution to an old problem. I want to be able to work on a car again and understand it from bumper to bumper like I did with my beater as a teenager. I want to spec it out like I would a computer and pay exact prices for what I buy (some people enjoy haggling--I go out of my way to avoid it like I would any interaction where the other person's job is to screw me). I want what may be my last driving experience before automated vehicles become ubiquitous to be in something as refreshing and memorable as the Beetle.
Maybe it happens. Maybe it doesn't. I'll be having more fun with the same money than I'd ever have had with a slot machine, though.
