What I can't understand is why these 3 industries went to all the expense of building this prototype and yet just assume it won't get put in production. ...snip...
Because there's a huge disconnect between this project and what works in the real world.

Walmart gets to parade it around and say they're developing "green" tech which gets trouble making no nothings off their back.

Mean while in the real world the trucking industry runs off being able to do it's job for the lowest possible cost. That means they can't spend X3$ for a truck and it can't require an aircraft technician to maintain it.

Thanks for the edification. I should have know Walmart was conning us. They usually are.

There's no con. They spent good money to pacify trouble makers who are clueless as it's often cheaper to give into blackmail.

A modern diesel engine is a zero emissions engine. It put's out nothing but water and carbon dioxide. If there's a con it's people who have taken advantage of the miserable state of science education in America to convince the ignorant that CO2 is a pollutant.

As for sustainability if the obstructionist would get out of the way we'd have more diesel fuel than we could ever use.

All the more reason to find a more efficient truck. Fuel is THE biggest expense in trucking. An OTR truck may run 150000 miles a year. At 6 MPG that's 25000 gallons of $4+ diesel.

There are guys out there getting close to the 10 mark, with well speced rigs driven just right, but that's the exception rather than the rule. Last I heard the industry average was very low sixes.
