Obdii Code Reader

I noticed on slickdeals.net today that an OBDII code reader made the front page. I have been considering buying one.

Reading the comments was quite informative. Bluetooth vs WiFi, etc. Since I am an Android user it appears that Bluetooth is better. One link lead me to:

Maybe some discussion here will help me make a decision.

I think the question is; What do you want to do with it? Do you want information only? Or did you plan on doing performance adjustments with it?

The software that comes with these is rudimentary, and you're better off buying an off-the-shelf app for your Android device to make sense of the data from the scanner. I use DashCommand and I think it was about $10. Well worth it. It was for iOS but I'm sure they have an android version.

I use one of those generic $10 mini/stubby bluetooth OBD2 dongles and Torque Pro with my Android phone. This is my second dongle, I bought an even cheaper one off eBay a while back and it died after a couple uses (I do not leave them plugged in). Works great for general code reading and clearing, but also nice to have the extra gauges for times when I feel like monitoring my car more closely.

I've used this one for years with the Torque App without issue. I like it.

I have to chime in that I really like Torque Pro. Very configurable. You can even program your own custom gages with it, if that's your thing. The only problem is that it may be a bit *too* configurable! It can be hard to decide on what you may want to show, based on the screen size of your device.

Honestly, I use to to chase codes for people more than anything. Otherwise, I've used it to see my exhaust temperature during regeneration... THAT's a scary number!

I use the VeePeak OBDII wifi scanner (with on/off button). I prefer wifi, because I can still have my Bluetooth streaming music.

You can use Bluetooth for more than one thing at a time. I use Bluetooth on my phone to talk to my OBDII adapter at the same time as I use Bluetooth to stream audio to a portable speaker. Never had a problem. Bluetooth bandwidth is way higher than that used by the code reader.
