I found that interesting too, since many media types may struggle with and require a learning curve to drive a manual for the first time. Perhaps the P6 will have the AMT and follow shortly after.

understood .... one would think that folks who write about cars should be able to handle a manual transmission but that may not be the case

Auto reporters sure should, but the morning show/business show types may very well not, and that's a lot of PR to ignore.

excellent point .... unless they plan for the P6 to follow quickly on the heels of the P5 and for it to have an AMT, its a decision I don't understand .... that said, I have no doubt it is something that they feel is in the best interest of the project at this point and as such, am content to watch the progress

Actually it makes perfect sense. If a reporter or potential investor is proficient in manual shift they will think it's wonderful. The AMT on the other hand will seem very rough and clunky to everyone accustomed to conventional automatic transmissions. Only people familiar with driving a Smart 4two or other single clutch AMT car will be able to enjoy the experience right out of the gate. Better to stick to manual transmission drivers at first.
interesting observation .... having never driven a vehicle with an AMT, I hadn't thought of that
