I was looking at the dimensions of the overall size of the Elio and got to wondering about how they came up with these numbers. I am comparing the info they put out on P4 and P5.

I can understand how the front wheel track dimension (66.8" center rim to center rim) may be pretty much set due to the physical size of the engine/Trans combination.

The overall length has not changed, 160.5". The wheelbase has not changed, 110.0". The overall height has not changed, 54.2". Interior dimensions are the same. Nothing has changed dimensionally between these two iterations.

I am curious as to how they got "locked in" to these numbers. I know there is a large amount of modelling to come up with rough (close) estimates, but I would think through practical experience, that there would be some kind of incremental changes.

Thoughts and practical observations from the experienced members of the group here?

Thanks in advance!

The basic CG location and frame geometry were not intended to substantially change with the P5. They had some minor frame tweaks from the crash & aero analysis and road/fit testing so far in combination with design decisions driven out of the IAV engine design efforts, but the overall architecture was set by the P4. If there were significant changes in basic dimensions, I would be concerned that the design isn't near ready for production as it is intended to be at this point.

Being exactly the same is maybe a bit odd, but I wouldn't have expected any particular number to change by more than a few tenths of an inch.

I was under the impression that some of the interior dimensions changed to get headroom in the back seat.

I am guessing there is a formula or ratio. Width to length for optimum balance and to accommodate two passengers with the least wind resistance or best Coefficient of drag ratio at the lowest weight possible.

I think the nose has been extended a few inches, and the ground clearance was increased by about 1.5" ? So, (you ask) why have these changes "not" been reflected in the dimensions?.......Because it is still a prototype. ;) :D
