A lot of news from Pebble today:

Introducing Pebble Time Steel

It's Business Time

Just when you thought things couldn't get any better, we saved the best news for last.

Today we are extremely excited to finally announce Pebble Time Steel. Quite simply, it looks fantastic! Where Pebble Time is more sporty and playful, Time Steel emphasizes different design cues and brings a refined and elegant aesthetic to the same Pebble you know and love.

At its core, Time Steel is powered by the same system as Pebble Time…with a few tweaks.

Delicately crafted, CNC-finished 316L stainless steel case
Larger battery, up to 10 days of normal use
Same color e-paper display, now bonded directly to the top lens
Available in Gunmetal Black, Silver Stainless, and Gold (you’re welcome, @CaliforniaLahve!)
Includes two straps: fine leather and stainless steel
Same great features as Pebble Time:

Comfortable, ergonomic design. 1mm thicker on Pebble Time Steel.
Water resistant. Swim, shower, run in the rain—all good (leather strap should not be submerged).
Built to last. Stainless Steel bezel with Gorilla Glass lens.
Customizable. Standard 22mm watch band with quick release mechanism.
Smartstrap ready. Magnetic charging port with data connection for smartstraps.

Time Steel starts shipping in July. Each reward package includes two straps (leather and stainless steel) for just $250, which is exclusive to Kickstarter. The regular retail price for this package will be $299.

Pebble Smartstraps

We believe your smartwatch should help you accomplish more every day.

When we started Pebble, we opened up the platform and invited the software developer community to build remarkable experiences for Pebblers everywhere.

Looking at all the amazing things our developers have created over the last 2 years, we decided to open the platform once more...only this time, for hardware developers.

Have you ever wanted to go for a run without your phone and still track your speed and distance? How about a Pebble watch with a battery life of more than a week? What about a NFC chip for payments, keyless car remote, or a pollution sensor?

Rather than trying to shove every sensor and doohickey into the Pebble Time, we decided to keep the watch simple and functional and give our incredible maker and developer community the opportunity to build from there. Up until now, if you wanted it all you had to compromise…on battery life, size, design or feature set. Not anymore.

That’s why we created Pebble smartstraps. It’s simple: straps can now contain electronics and sensors to interface directly with apps running on Pebble Time.

Now everything is possible -- GPS, heart rate monitor, NFC, battery extension, you name it! Accessory makers can create all of these. Not only that, it’s so easy to change straps (5 - 10 seconds) that you could swap them in and out on your way to the gym, before going on vacation, or even while getting into your car.

It’s in your hands (on your wrists) now. This is going to be awesome.

We’re still finalizing the entire system, but we wanted to announce this so hardware hackers can get started experimenting with the platform. Full details can be found on our developer blog. We may work on some of our own smartstraps at some point but right now we’re focused on opening the platform up for hackers and hardware developers. And we can’t wait to see what you can build.

Maybe your smartwatch can do everything…

This is a nice side by side comparison of two standard model Pebble Time watches on the left and two premium Pebble Time Steel watches on the right.

With people switching to the premium model, I was able to get a discounted early bird special on the plastic :)

Great! I figured some people would be able to do that.

The Kickstarter site has apparently been having some problems this morning so it looks like a lot of people having been changing orders around. :)
