What are the biggest advances in engine technology that will improve performance and mileage in the new Elio engine .

I can't answer as a gearhead but as a fellow who has watched from the sidelines, the biggest surprise to me is them designing an engine that can get a 11:1 compression ration out of regular 87 octane gasoline

The whole point of the Elio engine is to NOT have a fancy, complicated ANYTHING.
It's using EXISTING technology to keep the construction inexpensive.
There is no "Silver Bullet" making Elio super efficient. It uses several ideas to best efficiency starting with seating configuration (fighter pilot style front and back) this begets better aerodynamics and thus better fuel economy.
From there, smaller refinements with engine, drive train and aerodynamics have occurred.

Yep I will be watching this . Knock sensors are not really for controlling it all of the time It has not work well in motorcycles. Going in and messing with timing works to a point but ends up cost in other areas.
Not saying they can do it just that there are some facts of life we must face.
    Low octane fuel burns faster
    High octane fuel burns slow

    Fixed that for ya. :)

First answers I can think of are sputtered cylinder linings, cam cover with integrated bearing bosses, single overhead cam, and timing chain instead of a belt.

Those are common misconceptions. They burn at the same rate. The octane affects resistance to detonation, not burn rate.

Agreed. If burn rate is the only difference, there would be no reason to produce it and sell it at a premium. The reason for an increased compression ratio is to get more output from the same mass flow through the engine. A bigger bang for your buck, if you like.

A timing belt increases mpg about 1mpg.
From what I have read. a chain lasts longer.
The combustion chamber shape is pretty trick in this little motor.
At high compression knock managment is a good thing is proven and works well. ...add a turbo or any power adder later its a must.
Detonation will wipe out a motor. this is the down side to high compression.

The long stroke will help this lil engine in the torque area and is a good idea.
The downside to long stroke is bore ring wear.

And we all know what I think about spray bore ;)

All these ideas have been around a long time nothing new or revolutionary .
Only so many ways to make a big air pump...lol

Weight and drag are the big factors.
