The most recent photos we've seen of the engine don't support a shared sump lubrication design. That very round, smooth surface at the tail end of the crankshaft is for the rear main seal, and you wouldn't bother using one in a shared sump engine.

I noted that as well .... I wish I could fine the post were joint use of oil was discussed but as noted several times, the search feature on this forum and I generally have a failure to communicate

over the years I've followed several different oil change strategies .... usually what I do is dictated by how we use the vehicle and what the manufacture recommends .... back during the 10 years I drove 140 miles round trip to work, I would change the oil and filter when the odometer showed 10,000/20,000/30,000/etc .... half way (15,000/25,000/35,000/etc) I'd change the filter and add a quart of oil .... we put just under 350,000 miles on a Chevy Cavalier that we owned during that time .... and well over 250,000 on some others .... for the most part I service ours a 5,000 mile intervals because its easy for me to keep up with on the odometer .... on our 2011 Chevy truck, which has lifetime warranty on the motor, we change by when the truck's computer says we have under 20% of oil life .... I no longer try to keep up with the miles between changes, its proven to usually be over 7,000 miles but varies widely .... that Chevy is the only vehicle I've ever owned that came with and is recommended to use synthetic oil .... our Sportchassis came with the specific recommendation to not use synthetic .... I do use Carquest motor oil (reported to be Valvoline) and their filters in all but the Sportchassis where I use Shell Rotella-T .... after 40,000 miles I have always added Engine Restore to the oil at changes but haven't done so with the Chevy truck

A 5 qt. jug of Mobil1 was right at $40 last time I changed oil in the Suby (6qt capacity). My F250, on the other hand, only gets mineral (RotellaT). With an 18qt capacity and a $15 filter, it eats a Benjamin, and then some. :(

What engine do you have in the F250. My F150 is a 5.0 and only uses 7 quarts. Man, 18 quarts is a lot

7.3L Powerstroke ('96) diesel. Which, amazingly, gets around 18mpg. Not too bad for a Supercab 4x4 w/8' bed (like trying to park a school bus when I was having to drive it to work). Coming up on 300k on the odo., and purrs like a kitten:rolleyes:...Okay, maybe not a kitten because it's loud as hell when it's cold. But it does run good.

I'm not a Ford fan but there is no doubt in my mind that the 7.3 Powerstroke is the most bulletproof diesel that Ford has ever produced .... bolt on a full Banks package and they are still a hauling power plant

I'm much relieved .... I wasn't hallucinating ..:).. as I remember, with a shared oil the discussion was the 3,000 mile oil interval made sense .... without it

Jim

I read the same article awhile back, but if memory serves (hahaha)...the manual transmission was going to share the same oil, but not the auto!?! Or vice versa, but I believe I either read, or heard in an interview, that it was the first way around!

Anyone out there remember where that came from?

I'm still wondering if we're going to have to buy a specially formulated (Elio) oil in order to achieve the 84 mpg?

Here we go with trying to rely on our memories again... I think I remember that the transmissions will be the same either way. The 'manual' will be, well, manual. And the 'auto' will actually be the same transmission, just that they've automated the shifting and the clutch-work. I guess we'll need to review any and all transmission threads.

It's hard to "teach an old dog new tricks" and I have been changing my oil every 3000 miles for more than 50 years now. Never had an engine failure and have put over 400K miles on some of my vehicles. It's cheap insurance and it helps focus on caring for your vehicle. I will be changing the oil in my Elio at 3000 miles and cost will be inconsequential.

Can I have your old oil, please Jim? ;)

Best diesel engine that Ford ever sold. Good choice! A lot better than the 6.0 that replaced it
