Can we say ouch! I was looking for new VW diesel the year before they were to roll out the new TDI. Didn't want to buy the then current diesel and couldn't wait for the new diesel....so I didn't get one. Now I'm kind of glad it didn't work out. I still want a car with my initials though!!!!

I'm thinking very seriously of going to the local VW / Audi dealer, picking out the snazziest turbo diesel powered car I can find, and offer 30 cents on the dollar, cash. Just wonder if I could walk out with something really nice for about 12 thou. Because if dealers can't sell 'em, and VW says they can't, guess who gets stuck with unmovable inventory? Just back the papers a couple of days .... and bingo! A pretty nice, if not particularly clean, automobile.

But then, if I did that, I guess my morals wouldn't be any better than theirs.

The Beetle just Bombed!

Just the past week or so, I've heard talk of trying to strip away some of the "immunity" CEOs have at these large companies. They obviously rake in a lot of money and In most cases, probably well deserved. But when some kind of wrong doing takes place – the CEOs and upper echelon pay the fines with the company's money (stockholders' money too) and then they skate away. I don't know the details of this situation, as I haven't taken time yet to really read about it. But if wrong doing was known by the suits and their heads were turned or worse – they should have to pay fines out of their own pockets. Perhaps serve a little time too.

I'm pretty disappointed in VW. I thought they were better than that.

The CEO of that peanut company down in Georgia that killed 9 people because of salmonella poisoning, he's getting 28 years behind bars.
I remember hearing of the outbreak, but was unaware of the convictions. I just read a bit about it. Sounds like the two brothers deserved the book thrown at them. From what I read, it was the first federal felony conviction for a company executive in a food safety case. That's a definite step in the right direction.

Greed is a powerful motivator – and sometimes not in a good way.

This is nothing new, just a new player in the same game. When the emissions laws started to tighten, Cummins, Caterpillar, Detroit Diesel, and Mack (maybe some minor players as well) got busted doing the same exact thing. It cost them dearly, even forced Cat out of the on highway engine market completely.

I personally believe it's an intentional dirty trick by the diesel hating bureaucracy at EPA. They write the rules, mfgs comply with the letter of the rules (which includes the test procedure) and then enforce the intent of the rule.

I'd go further here, but it'd get political fast.

Turns out that this is not just the 1,000,000 in the US. It is 11,000,000 worldwide.
And the CEO of VW just resigned today.
