Solve This Math Problem

I have a roll of cloth that is 18" in diameter. It has a tube in the center that is 4" in diameter. The cloth is 0.012" thick.
How many feet of cloth is on the roll? Show your work!

Bonus points: If the width of the cloth is 38" how many sq.yards in the roll?

(Since the cloth may not be wrapped tight maybe 0.015 should be used?)

Easy answer is100yds because cloth is sold in easy numbers.

I have worked out my answer and want validation. (I used AutoCAD and a calculator.)





The answer I am hoping for is 1000 yards.

This is a shiny keys moment, "Hey, look over here!", but is not cloth generally sold in bolts that are 36" wide?

9(squared) x 3.14159 = 254.469 area of 18in circle

2(squared) x 3.14159 = 12.566 area of 4 in circle

254.469 - 12.566 = 241.903 area of cloth

241.903 / 0.015 = 16126.867 inches long area of cloth divided by thickness

16126.867 / 12 = 1343.906 feet long converting to feet


16126.867 * 38 = 612820.946 square inches area of cloth in sq inches


612820.946 / 1296 = 49248 square yards converting to square yards.

I brute-forced it in Excel. Can't remember the fancy math.

468 wraps around around the spool to get from 4" to 18" diameter.

1,348 feet long

4,270 square feet

474 square yards

Edit: Had the width of the roll off by an inch...
