Yes, in WA if you see a vehicle with flashing lights on the shoulder, you are to move over a lane, if you can't, you are supposed to at least slow down as you go past the site. Flashing lights are cops, WADOT vehicles, or any other emergency vehicle (fire truck, ambulance)Speaking of lanes, in florida (maybe other states) if a cop is stopped on the right shoulder, and you are in the lane closest, you are required by law to attempt to move to the left lane. Never happens!!, Florida- required by law to drive with headlights on when raining- never happens, required by law not to crash into the rear of a stopped vehicle- happens FREQUENTLY!!
Yield Signs???? Are you kidding??? People have no clue what a yield sign means; or they think if you have a yield sign, other people are supposed to make way for you. People in WA state have no idea what merging is; they will stop at the end of an on ramp to wait for a space in the main line, and off ramps ....... they have to slow down 1/2 to 1 mile before an off ramp so they won't spin out in the turn in the ramp, or they don't think they'll be able to stop in time from freeway speeds.Sometimes the point of the law isn't to catch violators but rather to let the general public know that it is illegal. In the case of cell phone usage, the authority decides it is dangerous to use cell phones so they make it unlawful. The conscientious public will abide by the law (mostly). Sure, those who break it can still hurt/kill those who do follow it but it's better than just not making it a law. Some would use their cell phones if it wasn't against the law because "It isn't THAT dangerous" but because it's a law, they'll resist.
Still, I'd love to see a couple of laws enforced... Stop means stop. period. Not California roll, not slow down, stop. If the cops aren't going to enforce a stop sign, change it to a yield sign. When it comes down to it, most stop signs could be replaced with yield signs...
