I'm sure you can build one for low cost Craig.. Roof racks are something I would like as an option so a Thule could be added for extra storage and easily removed when not needed..

If I go on vacation with a rack or tow something, I will not expect 84MPG. Even 70 will be OK.

The carrier is only on when needed and the Thule is aerodynamic when in use.. No registration or insurance required either plus no backing up problems..

It would be a good comparison test between the Thule and a small trailer to find which would have the least effect on mpg.

Putting something on the roof increases your frontal area. CDa and less weight is what gives the good mileage...

Makes sense. I am hoping the small light trailer I am envisioning for long trips, will not reduce mpg to much.

Though, I'd imagine depending on how far behind the vehicle it is that the trailer would incur its own frontal area resistance. And as narrow as the Elio is, I'd have to think that the trailer would have to be awfully darn close to the car to not incur pretty much the full brunt of the headwinds.

You will also have rolling resistance with a trailer plus sway etc.
