What's rather crazy is the Western Washington has the offices of two of the major players in tunnel boring machines; Herrenknecht AG in Tacoma and Robbins in Kent. Bertha was built by Hitachi Zosen Sakai Works in Osaka, Japan

A little known fact, when they were boring the Eisenhower tunnel their machine started to fail, they did a cost analysis and decided to bore off to the side and abandoned it. Brought in another machine and finished the job. It's still there today.

That is interesting John, I've driven through that tunnel many a time.
