I'm actually not to worried about this to be honest. After the money spent to keep a 20+ year old pickup going, unless the Elio really turns out to be a lemon, I should save on maintenance. Plus, I'm pretty "easy" on stuff.

I have bought five new cars in my lifetime. I have only once taken one in for warranty work, and it would have been cheaper to do it myself. A seat latch broke on my VW Golf, and it took three trips to the dealership to get it fixed. 40 miles each way... Arranging for rides to and from the dealership... Hours of my time... All for a $10 part.
I used to drive around 40k miles a year. Now I drive more like 12k. I would buy my cars with no warranty if they would knock the price down. As long as recall work is still take care of.
Watch out for extended warranties. A couple of people I know bought them at dealerships, but they turned out to be from 3rd party companies who then disappeared.
