Water Injection?

The P-51D (and subsequent) models of the AAC-designated "Mustang" were capable of delivery of 1,380 hp, but with water injection, WEP could produce as much as 2,218 hp for up to five minutes. These engines were built by Packard in the US under license from RR, and were basically the "Merlin" equivalent.
Water injection was present on some of the big round motors too, notably the F4U Corsair that was a real monster, along with the P-47 Thunderbolt. Both aircraft used water injection later in the war, primarily as a means of generating additional takeoff power with heavy bomb loads, rather than dogfighting capability. But additional turbo boost and water injection were available when somebody was using you for a shooting gallery.

When you pushed the throttle to the stop, you were at "full military power", but in an emergency, like someone appeared on your tail and you needed to MOVE, another hard shove on the throttle would break a small wire across the throttle quadrant and allow "War Emergency Power", which basically started the water pumps and sprayed the water/alcohol mix into the intake, cooling the charge. Of course there were consequences for this extra burst of power, most notably a considerable amount of damage to the engine if WEP were selected for more than a few moments. In addition to destroying your engine over enemy territory, you ran the considerable risk of having to return to base and explain that broken throttle quadrant wire to your crew chief.

Use of WEP required a thorough inspection of the engine, and after a few minutes of operation, a complete teardown. It wasn't the way to keep your crew happy.

Packard made engines for high speed boat racing before the war. One of the problems with the rooster tails the PT boats made is that the Japanese pilots could see them for miles to attack them.

Here's a Packard engine...Saw this one at the Pageant of Power in Cheshire a couple of times.

I don't think it does 84 mpg.... and it's a bit temperamental when hot!

Pffft!!

This is a forum about 3 wheelers!

This is a B-52 and a KC-135 with water injection system. If you don't know which one is what, then it doesn't matter anyway. Ha! The black smoke is created when the water is injected. They since changed the engines and do not use this with the new high bypass turbo fan engines.
