Those things were and are a joke. Poorly styled and generally uncomfortable. I did once sat in a Messerschmidt, I think I'd rather ride in a Studerbaker stage coacl.
I owned a HMV Freeway for several years. While I liked the simple "messerschmitt-like" concept, the development and execution were very lacking and there were many issues. The industrial motor was noisey, the CVT was not designed for automotive use and wore out quickly, the rear suspension / subframe mountings were insufficient and made the car unstable, the steering joints were insufficient and wore prematurely, the front suspension was poorly calibrated and had no upper/lower bump stops, there was virtually no rollover reinforcement in the body shell, the shoulder belt bolted into the fiberglass lower shell with a simple round plate reinforcement (and was way too low), and the list goes on. The original Messerschmitt was a far superior vehicle...
Clark Howard, the consumer guru from Atlanta, was talking about his Freeway today. He said that his didn't have a reverse and when he overshot something, he had to get out and push it backwards.
