Using the "squeaky wheel" theory, I figure the more we complain about the Elgin dash the better the chances it will be abandoned.

I've tried to figure why EM would opt for such a lame product. I know, I've heard the theories and and just don't buy it. I have my own theory as to what's really going on. As with most business decisions it comes down to money. I suspect the makers of the Elgin went out on a limb to manufacture a large number of units thinking they could sell them. Then, they found that no one really wanted them and they were stuck with a plant and inventory and no buyers. Along comes EM, a new auto maker looking for ready made parts and committed to keeping costs down. So, the Elgin people made EM an offer they couldn't refuse. I would love to know what EM is going to pay for them...

Now EM has an instrument package at a cheap price. But wait, it gets even better. Not only is the cost of the unit a money saver, but the cost of labor to install it is too. Instead of having to install and connect several different instruments now they only have to install one self contained unit and plug it in. Quick, easy, labor saving and, most important, money saving.

So what if most people don't like it, it's just a dash and not going to be a deal breaker. Those that want an Elio will buy one anyway and who cares if they complain about the dash, they'll get used to it....

Sigh... yet again with the very vocal haters that seem to think that their opinion is shared by everyone and that if they continue to be a "squeeky wheel" that for some reason a very large machine will bow to their wishes. The fact is that EM has stated that the dash of little consequence when they display the Elio. The fact is that EM has stated that the elgin will be the dash. Quit whining about things that won't change - it only annoys us that want to move on.

I think that is an outstanding idea. You should do it! Please keep us informed. I would be amazed if you could get "up and running" for under $10k. You should reach the "break even" point just from the haters on this site!

Yup, 10, that seems about right. EM should definitely change course and delay production for these few haters that simply won't realize that the elgin is what it is. If it is so horrible please just move on.

Particularly with all of the nay-sayers, now I'm really looking forward to trying out the Elgin dash. I don't want to miss the opportunity to try something new just because some people were scared of it/thought it was ugly/etc.

Hooray for enlightened and accepting thought. Whether you like it or not, the elgin is the dash so getting ready to embrace it is a very positive way of moving forward.

I hate to pay for two gauge clusters. Perhaps the gauges can be modified to be like they originally were. (They are modification of traditional needle type gauges.) It would require a number back ground and a rotating needle. I fear the rotating number wheel that is standard, may be difficult to removed from the small shaft it mounts on, without damaging the movement. You know there would be a market for a modification kit.

If you notice, there is nothing derogatory in my post. I am being purely technical. The elgin dash will be in the vehicle. I am wondering how difficult it would be to change it without having to pay for a new dash. Perhaps it can be altered back to the original it was based on. It would be nice if someone would develop such a kit. However, if such a kit was made, how difficult would it be to change. It looks delicate to me.

I was hoping someone having experience with gauge movements would respond telling how difficult it would be. I see removing the rotating disk and adding the needle as being the most difficult part.

Are there any people with gauge movement experience who can comment?

I loved the idea of the squeaky wheel so much that I went to the Elio site and contacted Elio Motors asking a simple question. "Will there be an optional analog gauge cluster for those of us that don't like the Elgin dash?"

I think that everyone that doesn't like it or would prefer an analog cluster should do the same!
