Whew... sorry about that. I like numbers.:D
My head exploded! I ass.u.me if the gas tax would change to miles driven that it would vary by vehicle classification..........certainly weight of the vehicle determines the ultimate wear and tear impact on our roadways, although politicians may not be smart enough to recognize that fact. Perhaps the vehicle class and weight issues could be added to the yearly vehicle licensing fees.

If Tesla doesn't use gas, then they wouldn't pay a GAS tax at all. But if they are contemplating a mileage tax to replace a gas tax, then that would be fairer than the current tax setup.

Not really.

It's like saying an Elio does the same road damage per mile as an 80,000lb truck.

If tax fairness is truly the goal, then the road tax should be calculated by pound/mile. (or kg/km)

Fair if the mileage is taxed on the specific vehicle classifications: Motorcycle, Autocycle, car, trucks.....light, med, heavy, etc.

The only thing that appeals to me about sustainable transportation options is that they are sustainable by this definition: Any form of transport that does not use or rely on dwindling natural resources. Instead it relies on renewable or regenerated energy rather than fossil fuel that have a finite life. I think future generations will be grateful to those that adopt the philosophy and supported the technology to make it happen. I think we need ICE, hybrid, and PEV options. Drive what you like, Like what you drive.
This is critical. And is why efficiencies in building energy use are 6x tbe best that was thought possible 15 years ago. And it's the reason that Elio 1.0 will be replaced by an EV version within 12 years ... or EM will go out of business. As a future Mr.Robinson will whisper to some future Dustin Hoffman, "electrics, son, electrics."

I agree, but think EM will introduce an EV Model in 5 years or less from the official production start. Perhaps EM should have marketed the $6800 ICELIO and a $11,900 EVELIO simultaneously to cover both market demographics. The EV Model may have carried the ICE Model by insuring the ATVM loan and crushing any future three wheeler commuter EV competition, but what do I know. Regardless, it will all work out.

Because that doesn't reward fuel efficiency OR weight reduction.

It doesn't reward fuel efficiency. But with the addition of EV's on the market, that may no longer be possible.

As for rewarding weight reduction, that's EXACTLY what it does.

weight x (set distance) x (set price) = total tax.
reduce the weight by 10%, reduce the tax by 10%.
