What Will Be The Primary Use For Your Elio?

Just made my reservation yesterday. I have been wondering what other people plan on using their Elio for and why they bought it. It's such a new concept in America that it's fascinating to ponder how people will put it to use. So I'll start with who I am and how we will use it.

I'm the Owner of Allied Building Contractors in Roxbury VT. We are a Design/Build General Contracting Company. We have a keen focus on energy efficient building techniques and building science - those concepts are incorporated, in some way, into every new construction and renovation/remodel we do. I have often thought about the juxtaposition of the focus of how we build buildings with me driving around a full size pickup that gets 16 MPG. When I became aware of the Elio it was the perfect solution. 75% of the time I am alone in my truck (as most contractors are) carrying nothing but some files, a laptop, and perhaps a few small tools in the back seat. I put on almost 20k miles per year and trucks are not inexpensive to chew through every 3-5 years. Roughly calculating my travel to and from job sites, meetings with clients, and other associated travel I figure the Elio will pay for itself in 2 years. It will certainly begin some visibility to our business in a way that is consistent with our beliefs about building structures. It will also increase the longevity of my truck which will be relegated to trips only when needed for it's hauling or towing capacity - which reduces the need for more trucks to be bought in the future (conservation). If the Elio proves to be functional and effective, it will be a pretty easy choice to offer to employees as a fleet company vehicle. Most carpenters aren't living the high life and a benefit like a company car that costs them very little to operate will be an excellent use of the vehicle.

Now what's your story?
I can relate to your story. I ran the internal shop for a large commercial building construction co. We were a one stop shop that housed all the trades under one roof. The Superintendent had to make a showing at almost all sites every day or two. His mode of trans. was a suburban, which we all helped finance the operation of, and he really pushed it to make the rounds. After a half million miles it was finally sold, only to be replaced with another. (I think they were pushing the image). I agree, the Elio will boost anyone's
Image of responsibility. Painter's, paper hanger's, folk's making multiple trips to the same site will definitely appreciate the Elio. Welcome aboard.

I can't see the Elio providing the same experience as my bike, even if it is technically classified a motorcycle. Nor can it duplicate my Miata with the top down, and it certainly can't fly like the planes I built. However I think it will provide it's own unique level of enjoyment. Can't wait to pull into a random car show for the first time. Aside from daily errand running I think it would make an inexpensive cross country traveler. It can certainly carry as much as my Miata or my plane and a lot more than my bike and I've camped with all of them - so why not the Elio?
Exaaaaactly! I made an 8500 mile trip with my BMW 1100RT, and never really enjoyed that whole camping thing. I did it in the USMC but an older man I am, and the Elio touring in a down pour, and 45 degrees has to be better, and the savings will buy a motel room.

I'm just curious. Since the Elio is primarily made for commuting to work or running errands what is the primary use for you getting this vehicle? I'm retired so my primary usage will be for play. Something to tinker with and cruise around visiting family members without using a lot of gas. Maybe even a budget tent camper for long trips.

50 years of riding a bike, hung up my leathers, and bingo- ELIO- instantly knew this was it!! @72 this will fit my needs to a "T"., second vehicle, and use it for local riding, and if it feels comfortable, weekend tripping the mr2 is a "rough ride", low center of gravity, and a fun car, and hoping the ELIO will blow the toyota away!!

Daily driving for work will pay for it. Any trip when I'm solo including maybe some long runs to Colorado Springs. Basically anything that doen't require the farm truck. I have had a bike for 35 years , never had one that got better than 48MPG, and I always got wet :) The K75 isn't going anywhere, thats why I am more than happy with the 55HP of the Elio.

My hobby is long distance motorcycle touring - 30k miles so far this year, to include FL, ME, AK & CA - and though I can't imagine @60 having the need to give up the Harley for awhile, I really look forward to doing some of the same things in my Elio, too.

I belong to a group called the Iron Butt Association that "enables" this LD addiction, with entry level rides being 1K miles in 24 hours, Funny thing, it's 1,036 miles door-to-door from the Shreveport factory to my house, and I'd love to ride that straight through on less than 2 tanks of gas! I've been up the AlCan Highway twice, now, where a 650 miles range on regular gas will come in rather handy. I can't imagine taking it up the Haul Road because I wouldn't want to abuse it that way, but the rest of Alaska would be a riot.

So...I'll lead, who wants to join me on a group tour of Elios to Alaska?

I've driven the ALCAN 6 times, the first in Feb. 68. All trips were before any paving in Canada (except Whitehorse) and in all four seasons.
I suppose one more trip in an Elio would be another great adventure. Sign me up for that one.:)

Commuting to my home brewing shop five days a week, and maybe occasional playtime in the North Georgia and North Carolina mountains.

It will be cool to see another Elio on the North Georgia roads. We live in Nicholson, just north of Athens but spend many hours exploring the North Georgia and North Carolina mountains. Is there any group of Elio owners in this area of Ga?
