hopefully we will get an OBD-II port so we can use a head-up display such as the Navdy. With some sort of HUD installed I don't care what the dash looks like as I won't be looking at it much anyhow.

That's pretty cool- I wonder if it will be far enough away from me that I can read it in the early morning hours? I know that I've finally reached the point where my arms aren't long enough to allow my reading a newspaper without glasses.

That it is a good question, from reading the site they say that it looks like it is six feet in front of you.

I did a quick Amazon search for 'Head-Up display'. While there appears to be a lot of crap there are also some decent looking very basic HUD's which only need power as they use GPS to calculate your speed and they are available for under $100. That is not too bad compared to the more advanced Navdy which is $320 shipped and is only a pre-order as it does not ship until next year.

the response to my wife's question on facebook makes it pretty clear :

"... the Elgin inspired dash is planned to be standard, and if a vehicle that gets 84mpg on the highway and costs $6,800 isn't for you, than that's okay!"

they clearly have their minds made up and also clearly couldn't care much less when folks don't agree

The poll results speak for themselves. Ignoring the opinion of 72% of your potential customers can only guarantee failure.

If I had seen the layout of the intended instruments earlier, I would not have a non-refundable deposit in place.

Yup, that's why a different instrument cluster is going to be one of my options.

I'm somewhat confused .... do they offer a different instrument panel as an option ? .... if so, that can be made to work .... I do respect their right to pick whatever OEM dash they want .... that said, the tone of their response is in direct conflict with their claim to be a different kind of car company .... take it or leave it, our way or the highway seems to be their mantra .... over time I've actually had better responses from both Ford and Chevy .... I find that to be somewhat surprising/disturbing

Actually EM's official position is that the final dash design has not yet been decided. We are supposed to get a picture or rendering of the newest revision sometime soon however even that is not set in stone as they are still in the design process. EM has also discussed the possibility of optional dashes however even that decision is not final.

They are fully aware of where people stand, and some people have likely taken letting them know that a bit far, however we are also basing our discussion on renderings/photos which we also know are not up to date however they are the newest we have.
