I took the the ASVAP test and then the next day was taking the physical and when I got to the hearing test, they disqualified me since I wore a hearing aid and had been since I was in 1st grade (I had told the recruiter about this and he didn't think it was a problem). I did have the privilege to work on a couple of Military programs and with the associated military personal when I worked at McDonnell Douglas (Navy T-45 program at Pax River, Maryland and the Air Force C-17 at Edwards Air Force Base in California).I spent a grand total of 18 days in the Air Force back in 1979. Had damage to the vision in one eye (from a punch that smashed in my cheekbone when I was 15), which I was initially assured would keep me out of the pilot's seat, but wouldn't stop me from being a navigator or other in-flight position. Then while I was down sweating out July at Lackland, I was pulled in and told that I couldn't have a flight position, but I still had a seat for OTS. Then a few days later, an actual Colonel gave me the choice of surrendering my OTS spot and staying in as an Airman Recruit, or taking a 4-F on my eye and packing my bags. I thought about it overnight, then got on a bus the next day.
All these years later, I still can't tell you if it was the right decision.
Come on 3card you can give us more than that.I was in the Gator Navy out of Littlecreek from 1966-1970
How many people know that the Air Force grew out of the Signal Corps. I too did my 23 week field radio repair mos training in Fort Gordon. Only it was in 1967 and then on to my duty station in Ft Walton Texas in the Army Security Agency, That was the Army equivalent to the present day National Security Agency.I have noticed many members who have discussed their service in various threads and wanted to start a thread about this. I know we have members across generations so I thought it would be interesting to hear a little about members service.
From 2000-2004 I served as a 25B Information Technology Specialist in the Army Signal Corps. I served tours in Afghanistan and Iraq where my role was to travel between various Forward Operating Bases and Combat Outposts supporting the technology systems needs including VOIP and internet access capabilities at MWR (Morale, Welfare, and Recreation) centers which allowed personnel to stay in touch with family back home.
Rode in the CMDRs for 21 days in Iraq with a flat. You obviously, haven't ridden in one. I'll take the Elio even though I have not had the opportunity to drive/ride in one yet. Without a doubt the Elio has to be more comfortable and fun to drive.
USN 1971 to 1977. I was in Subic Bay, Philippines from 1972 to 1976, during which time I got to travel all over the far east, including RVN a couple of times. My wife is Retired Corpsman USN, now a civilian Nurse at the San Diego Naval Hospital.
