Hi Jim,

I agree with pretty much all of the responses here.

One interesting aspect: as the media refers to the Elio vehicle as "the tiny three-wheeler", the next thing to come into the mind of a person just learning about Elio, will be safety. They'll want to see safety info and testing results.
Depending on your notion of "tiny" the Elio is not tiny like Smart. It is narrow, but as long as a typical compact sedan.

Yep, I explain it to people that instead of being 2 1/2 people wide, the Elio is 1 person wide. Wider front track than most vehicles, and just as long.

The Elio is being tested to car standards. Eventually, the feds will modify the rules. The 'autocycle' spec was a quick and dirty way to separate the Elio from motorcycles without having to completely rewrite the automotive descriptive specification, testing, and other standards. None of this makes sense. It makes little difference whether a car has three or six wheels (and there have been six wheeled cars - four in the front) if it is an enclosed space that contains human passengers. The 'autocycle' spec will disappear, as it should, and a general specification for all vehicles with passengers surrounded by a car-like structure and with car-like accommodations will be universal. When that happens, the Elio will already satisfy the new regulations while most other three wheeled contraptions with car seating, controls and steering, like the Polaris Slingshot, will fail miserably.

There is no FED. REQUIREMENTS/ CRASH RATINGS for motorcycles.
Paul is trying to be one step ahead of the govt.

Well, tell the folks at Elio that. I read in one of the posts, that the Elio passed the motorcycle crash tests with a 5 star rating. Maybe the tests were for 3 wheeled motorcycles??

it says:

"Motor Vehicle Safety. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) defines a motorcycle as “a motor vehicle
with motive power having a seat or saddle for the use of the rider and designed to travel on not more than three wheels in contact with the
ground.” In order for a manufacturer to sell motorcycles in the US, the manufacturer has to self-certify to meet a certain set of regulatory
requirements promulgated by the NHTSA in its Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS).

Our FMVSS strategy is designed to meet motorcycle requirements and conform as much as possible to automotive FMVSS
requirements while not violating the motorcycle requirements that we must meet."

It says the Elio is definitely designed to meet motorcycle safety requirements, and to meet automotive safety requirements if possible.

Of course, it should have very good automotive safety characteristics as shown from crash simulations.
