Interesting concept.
It basically requires a dry sump lube system.
But, have you ever gotten a defective ink cartridge?
OK! just a nuisance in your printer.
Now let's think about it in your car.
Sounds like you just ran your engine dry and burned out your bearings.
Neat concept, but dangerous.

That will put a lot of people out of work.
Maybe add a lot of money to the price of the vehicle, if installed in new production vehicles..

(My opinion)

It may save you money in the long run though says the guy who just spent $120 getting his oil changed. (I don't have a good way to deal with 14 quarts of oil at a time)

As far as displacing workers, good. This will free up those people from drudgery and allow them to move on to more lucrative employment... I know, I know... But, with technological advances comes social disruption. Ask buggy whip manufacturers, cobblers, tele-typists, and home telephone installers about progress.

Quick oil change.....Not even looking but from my experience bad idea.

Remember the Fram Sure Drain system ? I tried it.

Driving to meet my parents one day ... thunk followed by cloud of oil out of the back...

That stupid quick disconnect plug came loose and I dropped all my oil. Thankfully I was near my uncle and he helped me get a wrench new drain plug and oil.

Lesson Learned

On that same note, I once replaced an oil filter on a Mustang and got about 10 feet before it shat all it's oil out. Apparently, the old filter's oil ring stayed on the motor and I "double stacked" it with the new oil filter. Since then, I've always looked at the filter to make sure the old ring came off and that the new ring can go on. Lesson learned.

Point is, any method can be screwed up. A drop-in oil change kind of makes sense to me in a couple of aspects:

1. You save on local labor cost
2. It's quick
3. It's easy enough to do that people will be more likely to actually do it which is better for the engine and the environment.
4. It eliminates over-filling and under-filling oil.

It seems like a good deal, only if there is one standard. So I can choose what oil to use and would not be stuck paying what ever Castrol wanted to charge. I could also see what would be the equvailent of a core charge or deposit. Buy a replacement and you would get money back when you brought your old one back. It would also help with recycling of oil and the container could also be used again if made correctly

I HAVE USED DRAIN VALVES ON MY SUMPS FOR YEARS .
NOT A NEW IDEA , THEY HAD THEM 100 YEARS AGO ON FORD MODEL Ts !

YOU HAVE TO LIFT THE LEVER BEFORE YOU CAN TURN IT .
I HAVE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH ONE OF THESE .

looking back on the Sure Drain...the flats were very narrow against the drain pan...wasn't much to grab to get it on there tight. It was kind of funny after sitting for an hour before finally having the nerve to peek under the car to see .... no drain plug.
