My current car has over 240K miles. I am finally starting to experience a few minor issues with it. I drive about 35K miles per year on that car. I would like a elio but not sure I will be able to wait out till production.
Well, The Elio is supposed to be an "and" car. Maybe find a good deal on a used grocery getter in the mean time to commute with. Of course, you're the only one that knows your personal situation, but my family of three could never have just Elios.:)

I drive a car that will hit 300k this week. If it doesn't last (good chance) until Elio gets here, I'll just buy another cheap high miles car to get by.

My cost per mile is still way less, even with more maintenance cost, than buying a 30K mile lease return, or even a 100,000 mile late model. I'm sure not interested in brand new - unless we're talking Elio.

I've seen three solutions to this very issue presented on this forum before:
  1. Buy a new car, and forget about the Elio. (Not my favorite option, but valid all the same)
  2. Buy a cheap clunker that will last you a year or so, then sell it off to the scapyard once you have your Elio.
  3. Get a two-year lease on a new car to tide you over until the Elio is in your driveway.
Pick your poison. I really like the idea of a lease, but realistically if I need to make this choice I'll just end up getting a cheap clunker on craigslist. I'm pretty sure my current driver will get me to production though.

I had 2 clunkers, and was going to patch them up until the Elio was available.
Delays, then I had to move to a state that the clunkers would have never passed inspection.
Took over a lease on a car for 16 months (would not recommend)
More delays.
Lease ran out.
ALMOST bought a new car (Dealer wanted $400 for cruise control.... BWAHAHAHA!!)
Purchased used car with 100k.

(i swear, the dealers are their own worst enemy)

When I go looking for my main driver I spend months researching and shopping until I find what I want.
I used to buy and sell cars like a used car lot for most of my life, but that got old after 30 years of doing it. Had some really nice cars, and had some real duds too; almost always paid cash; at one point I had 9 cars/trucks, 5 of which didn't run (told the wife "they're investment cars").
for a lot of years I had company cars, so having other cars was just for fun.
But when I cut ties with the dark side of brokering cars I started getting some real jewels; currently I'm driving a 08 Dodge Nitro that has every option the factory offered and only 30K miles; got that 4 years ago for $16K (it had 18K miles on it when I got it).
Before that I had a Magnum, a Monte Carlo, Olds Cutlass, Pontiac 6000, Chevy Eurosport, all really low mileage, all no more than a year or 2 old (the Nitro was an exception). So the Elio is an "and" car for me.
