I totally agree Rickb. TM's Model 3 at it's base price of $35K is comparable to most decent cars nowadays. Spending 60K upwards to buy Tesla Model S is stupid in my book ( my opinion only) even if I have the money to burn, I can get my FUN factor w/ a middle entry BMW or Porsche for less. Spending $35K even if it's entry level for a Model 3??? No brainer in my book. I never had the luxury of having so many toys in my lifetime that I can afford and my wife will tolerate having, but it's exciting to finally get to own a car that I don't have to smell gas fume, let alone line up at our local Costco to get cheap gas! :D
I'm happy the people who had the money and foresight to buy the original Tesla Coupe and Model S bought them because it allowed for the battery technology to develop and ultimately become more affordable for the masses. I may plunk down $1K to reserve a place in line for the Tesla Model 3 after I see the final design and specs. I wonder if it's refundable?

The Tesla Model 3 reservation agreement states that the reservation is fully refundable. This was one reason why I went ahead and made the reservation this morning even though all the details have yet to become available. :D

Hopefully some time in 2019 I will park my Tesla next to the Elio already in my garage.

Thanks for the reservation agreement link. My first chance to watch the unveil video was a few minutes ago. I'm with you on placing a reservation on the Model 3. It checks all my boxes: styling, performance, build quality, range, and price point (high end for me). Sweet!

You got me there. :D

I could not justify the cost of a Tesla Model S or X however the Model 3 has a similar design and many of the features of those models at a price point which I can live with. At a base price of $35K it is still a luxury however one which many more people can afford.

To me the Elio and Tesla Model 3 are very different vehicles which would serve my needs in different ways. The Model 3 really appeals to the techie and modern gearhead in me while also serving my need at times for a larger, and more luxurious, vehicle. The Elio makes a great '&' vehicle for me as it promises to be a fun yet versatile vehicle which is very different from most vehicles on the road as well as offering the long distance touring convenience of an ICE and does all that with an ultra low total cost of ownership. These two vehicles would meet all my routine vehicle needs with the added bonus of being environmentally friendly which while not really a primary consideration for me it is a nice added bonus.

Are there different electric motors or controllers for different trim levels? I see some reports of 7s and others over 10s for 0-60: http://www.caranddriver.com/nissan/leaf#

The ones with 6.6kw inverters can pump more juice to the motor faster, which increases accelleration, and some have 30kw/h batteries, which extend range but weigh more and would thus hurt accelleration. So there are a few factors. I'm not even sure about the inverter thing though, because mine only has the 3.3kw inverter and it is still really zippy! (But then again I've never actually timed my 0-60).

Did Tesla say $35,000 is the entry level? What options would be added, bigger battery or what?
$35k could become $55K very quick.

No mention here of the BMW EV? It Looks a bit weird to me which is a tickle coming from a (hopefully) Elio owner.
Does it match up price wise/distance to a Tesla?
