Well then...an Elio is NOT for you :D
Being aware of situational limitations makes for more awareness. Why aren't you aware of that?
Hoisting an omni-directional (or wide angle)camera on an antenna in slow traffic might be more realistic than throwing the baby out with the bath water. Sheshhhh!!!!!!!! Makes tons more sense than bailing out as you suggest. You must have been airborne Army? They were the only ones I know of who jumped from a perfectly good form of transportation.

Actually I've found a couple of periscope options; I want to connect it to a monitor in the back of the headrest so the passenger can see forward or anywhere else. Shouldn't be that hard to do; and those headrest monitors are cheap.
Can also use it for and entertainment package like mini vans and Suburban's have.
Can you post one of those periscope sites? In bumper to bumper it might be interesting to have a camera eyeview from a higher perch, possibly retractable.

It mounts on the roof, it goes flush, and up enough to see.

And if I published the link, you wouldn't be able to get in; it a security equipment site I use for surveillance equipment.
And it's super expensive; that's what I'm using for the concept, the real deal will come later.
The picture above is a $6,700.00 camera system with IR and thermal.

Wow, a camera that would nearly double the cost of the Elio!

That's why some of the surveillance vehicles I have built cost Gobs of money; the surveillance suppliers know they have to produce top of the line items and charge accordingly; so of their stuff is extremely overpriced; but the agencies pay for it, and there are very few that build them.

I was thinking there aught to be someone who makes a simple roof-mount camera that could be used here... You could even route the feed to a small monitor and or sunshade AND the headrest monitor... BUT, I got to thinking, that would only put the camera up about 10 inches above my head in the Elio which still wouldn't be above the tailgate of my truck. I stopped looking.
