First off, as I remember it, Elio has always said the goal was to design it so that it could meet the requirements for a 5 star rating, but that NHTSA wouldn't actually rate it since its not a car, and they don't rate 3 wheeled vehicles. The last tests for most of the 25 prototypes was going to be crash testing. I remember Jerome commenting he'd be sick to see that. But there aren't any official agencies that rate Autocycles (yet?).

Second, in 2016 NHTSA "Added automatic emergency braking systems to the list of recommended technologies to help prevent or reduce the impact speed of rear-end crashes starting with model year 2018 vehicles." (https://www.nhtsa.gov/ratings). There's never been mention of Automatic Emergency Braking system on the Elio (although I'm sure it could be added at some cost). Or Lane Departure warning, or any of the other safety features that have become mainstream since the Elio was announced. I don't see any way they can claim 5 star rating without Automatic Braking based on current standards. I don't see that as a problem, it wouldn't stop me from buying mine should they ever become available, (not offering them in Yellow might ;)) but the definition of 5 star is constantly changing. What Elio targeted in 2015 won't meet 5 star requirements in 2020.

I believe if the autocycle companies made the autocycle meet the same exact standard of the automobile for all specs, then Elio would be funded right now and the Solo and FUV would have 500k reservations each. it would make the three wheeler industry take off. Elio would be up to 1M in reservations. Then it uses the same specification to let everyone know that your car is so inferior to the autocycle that yuo'd have to get one right away.

I hope to see Elio and the rest work with lobbyists to change the automobile rules to include three wheelers.

That would make it tough for Elio... They walk the tightrope of needing the differences between cars and autocycles in order to keep costs down (testing not required) but yet want to show they meet the car definitions. It's a tricky balance.

I did find out something depressing. If I get a $1K non refundable then, "Reserve by October 31, 2018 and receive a limited edition Elio T-Shirt."

Just reviewed the website today...the date in question is still listed as October 31, 2018 for this Elio Motors advanced reservation promotion...

Obviously...Elio Motors no longer has the money or employees to update their website...

The website is full of outdated PR misinformation...

I’m not so sure why they don’t just take their website down...

This is my favorite page of the current Elio Motors website...just pure outdated marketing BS...

When’s the last time Elio actually published a monthly newsletter?
