I've moved away from dark tint in many cases, in the bus I made some sweet curtains with a thermal blocking core, on the beetle I went with perforated vinyl, the sports cars and classics all get a ceramic tint that you can't really tell is there but protects the interiors from fading.

Texas allows 35% tinting on driver's and passenger windows (OK, all the same for your Elio) but no tint except an "eyebrow" (down to the inscribed marks) on the windshield. Aft of the front seats people seem to get away with anything. Our old minivan was practically blacked out in the rear - which made backing up at night problematical, requiring the installation of a backup camera. Our newer van has 35% all around, and our Lexus RX was OEM with 35% on the rear windows so I just had my installer match color and tint with 35% up front. It looks nice and cuts solar heating dramatically.

Our Elio's first aftermarket installation is going to be 35% tints. You're going to be the subject of a lot of stares, so a little privacy helps too. I already have a pair of dark aviator sunglasses - for just such occasions. :p

Might be a loop hole on this, but it's NOT a car so the tint laws may not apply... but you would be asking for trouble if you tint the front glass..... I will be tinting the windows but I am going to play it safe and stick to the book on mine.
