for folks who may be interested :

"On August 21, 2017, millions of people across the United States will see nature's most wondrous spectacle — a total eclipse of the Sun. It is a scene of unimaginable beauty; the Moon completely blocks the Sun, daytime becomes a deep twilight, and the Sun’s corona shimmers in the darkened sky. "

a guide to understand, prepare for, and view this beautiful celestial event can be found at this link : https://www.greatamericaneclipse.com/

Neat website, Jim! I might just take that day off. It'll be "complete" over Pacific, MO, but just south of where I work...assuming the map is accurate!
At any rate, I don't need much of an excuse to make a three-day weekend. ;)

NASA and Adler Planetarium of Chicago will be descending upon the small college town of Carbondale, IL for the event. Southern Illinois University's campus in Carbondale is playing host. They're expecting over 100,000 tourists to visit the area that single day. My boy and I will be two of those insane enough of to make the trek.

The convenient part about planning to view it there is the backup plan that exists -- should cloud cover restrict spectator viewing of the live event, at least you'd have the nation's chief astrophysics experts and commentators on site live-streaming the event using video feeds supplied from more suitable locations.

Sounds interesting! My "event" will be populated by "know-it-alls" [aka - The buddies I hang out with] and distilled and/or fermented beverages. Bonus - All my friends have welding helmets and lawn chairs so they won't be whining about using mine!

NSTG8R, if you hadn't seen this one, I was going to PM you; I figured that you'd be in the totality path! Two eclipse stories: we had a 98% total here when I was in grade school. A friend and I made and sold "solarscopes" out of decent sizes cardboard boxes that were essentially a pinhole camera you could put your head into, and watch the projected eclipse on a piece of white paper on the other end. We had a blast making them! We had a partial eclipse in (I think) 1997. At any rate, my divorce was finishing up at the time, and I had to stop by her attorney's office with a check that day. Since he was a complete jerk (water found it's own level between the two of them...), I hatched a plan. A close friend has a body shop in the same town, so I stopped by and borrowed from his stock of welding lenses. About twenty minutes before the eclipse was at it's peak, I showed up with the check. Sure enough, one of the secretaries said something about the eclipse, so I said if you want to look, I have a safe way to watch it. She accepted, and the other four ladies came along as well. I passed out the welding lenses, and we stood on the sidewalk watching the eclipse. At one point, I looked around to see my ex wife's attorney standing outside the door with his fists on his hips and a really pissed look on his face... Mission accomplished! I asked if they were in trouble, and one said, "Who cares? He's such an asshole." :D

BWHAHAHA! :D I love it! At our last court appearance, her lawyer made the mistake of complaining about her to my attorney while I could hear him. I shot back, "Five other attorneys turned her down, but you decided to take her on. Cry me a river, you get no sympathy from me." My guy grinned and said, "I told ya he says whet he thinks..." It was a good day. ;)
