When the OEM resonator on my Opel rusted out (too far down the exhaust stream to boil off moisture) rather than replace it with a poorly-made GM replacement, I installed about 18" of 2" pipe. Surprisingly it sounded good; quiet at cruise, with a surprising growl under acceleration. Lift at high revs, and you were rewarded with the crackle of a far more exotic sports car. Who knew? Sometimes the simple solutions are best

Personally I'd be fine with it if it sounds like a lawn mower, or even better, it could be nearly silent, (no, don't start the 'safety' crap again). This incessant "look at me... look at me.... " mentality baffles me. I'm too busy working 3 jobs to support my family to bother impressing anyone, or to give a rat's glutes what some random stranger at a stoplight thinks of my ride's 'coolness' level. The extra money I'll have to make my family's lives better is what makes Elio cool, and will feel FAR more satisfying than impressing some bystanders. Besides, when I start to impress the average idiot on the street, I start to assume I must be doing something WRONG.

...Unless it obnoxious Loud...

A few years ago, I bought a beat up 89 civic hatchback. It even had (3) real bullet holes! That car was ssoooo obnoxiously loud! I drove it 50 miles home with my friend following me. I kept my left hand up beside my face, It was so embarrassing! My buddy looked like he had been crying....and he said he had been! He told me that the reactions of people passing me got him to laughing so hard that he cried! I cut that "megaphone" off the next day. I had to test it before the new muffler and, Believe it or not, it was quieter with straight pipe, that with the old "megaphone!" I suddenly realized "why" it had bullet holes. :(

Can't count how many vehicle I have done repairs on where the driver could not hear the problem because of loud pipes. Would have saved their selves thousands if they had of had the repair done when the noise first started.
