I hope this is the case, I have my options all figured out if so.
A one way ticket from Baltimore to Shreveport is 250.
But a ticket to Dallas is 78, and greyhound from Dallas to Shreveport can be done for as low as 7 bucks.
Direct route is less stress, but where's the fun in that?
Road trip...
On the other hand, sounds like they're confident enough in their aerodynamics/etc that they're considering making changes that would lower theoretical mpg for the sake of usability.
I'm taking an optimistic approach to that deadline. Maybe they have a big announcement coming that they anticipate will significantly drive up reservations, so they are giving 'loyal' supporters the opportunity to get reservations/bonuses locked in before the madness starts.
Not likely, but...
I'd like that to be the case, but many if not all companies normalize the destination charge so it is the same whether you're 1 state away or 10.
If they offer free pickup at the factory, it would be yet another break from tradition.

That's not to say I think this will be as safe as my regular...
I think any shock will come from the destination, title, registration, and any 'prep' fees not scaling down in price the same way the vehicle price has. For a car 'sold' at 20k, you would probably walk away paying 22.2k after tax and fees, a ~11% bump. But with a car this price and the same...
Regarding economics, I don't discount the possibility that if the Elio falls under CAFE standards, they could sell energy credits to the larger companies.
I'd personally prefer an automatic with cruise control for traffic/mpg reasons, but it remains to be seen whether i'll want to pay the upgrade cost (whatever that may be) to get a unproven AMT (unproven in the one-of-the-first-few-thousand-off-the-line sense).
It occurs to me that as a company selling an inexpensive commuter vehicle that plans to offer vehicle wraps as factory options, Elio would be uniquely poised to offer an additional vehicle discount option where, say, the vehicle is sold at (or below) cost but outfitted with an Elio advertisement...
