Wal Mart batteries are built to a lower standard. I tried em for a while, never could get one to last a whole year. The warranty would replace em, sure, but the inconvenience, or even danger, if the weather was bad enough, of having a car strand me due to a couple bucks saved on a battery...
That's a misconception. Warranties can't be voided by having service done at a private shop, or even under the tree in your yard. You just need to prove (parts receipts, etc) that all the needed services were done according to the maintenance schedule.

I do take care of my stuff, and prefer to fix when it breaks till it's plumb wore out. You just don't buy 80,000 mile tires anymore once it's north of 200,000.
