Being an engineer, I'm betting Paul had a better reason than most people have stated.
As for the MPG compared to your motorcycle, I'll just say that there are MANY cars sold outside the US that get well over 50 MPG. Not just tiny, unsafe cars, either. VW has a two person tandem concept car...
The backup camera comment? It doesn't look like you struck a nerve unless you've been getting nasty personal messages. I was simply pointing out that they aren't intended to replace a rear view mirror... They are there to help you see what you couldn't see in a rear viewmirrow: small kids...
Backup cameras have more to do with reducing the number of children who get run over in driveways and parking lots. Most of these would not have been prevented if people turned their heads, because children are not always visible behind a car or truck.
Every week in the US, fifty kids are...
I don't just want to reduce foreign oil... I want to reduce domestic oil consumption as well.
Two cars ago, I had a 5 passenger car that got 50+ MPG and was very safe. Due to circumstances beyond my control, I am driving a 7 passenger (sort of) car that gets me 16 MPG on my daily commute...
I have bought five new cars in my lifetime. I have only once taken one in for warranty work, and it would have been cheaper to do it myself. A seat latch broke on my VW Golf, and it took three trips to the dealership to get it fixed. 40 miles each way... Arranging for rides to and from the...
First, let me say that I don't mind the Elgin dash.
Now... I happen to be in the market fot a couple of Fiat 500s for my business. They have an optional instrument cluster that is totally different (and nicer, in my opinion) than the base model.
Don't forget that we changed the way we measure a car's horsepower in 1972.
My current cars have about 1.11 and 1.13 horsepower per cubic inch. That's a 2011 Subaru and a 1998 Benz, respectively. If the Elio puts out 60hp like IAV claims, that puts it at 1.09 horses per cu in. Not far off...
Same here, but Mercedes did put a terminal under the hood. Not a lot of room in the engine compartment... In fact, one of the front axles goes -through- the oil pan!
I haven't heard anyone mention this yet (probably missed it), but is the final production car going to have only a lap belt in the back seat like the P5?
Not since 2007. They used to do two tests: city and highway. Now they do three more: High speed, A/C, and cold temp. These three are used to adjust the values of the city and highway tests.
The city test is up to 56 MPH with 23 stops. The highway test is up to 60 MPH. The high speed...
I've only owned one car (and a van) with the fuel full on the driver's side. I consider the passenger side (well, that doesn't work for Elio) to be normal.
Weight doesn't influence cruising MPGs as much as people think. I had a conversation with someone who swore that you lose 1 MPG for every additional 100 pounds. I asked him why my Sprinter van got 24 MPG empty and 21 MPG with a 6,000 pound load. His math would have me getting -36 MPG.
I used to drive a Golf TDI. The most I ever got was 902 miles on a tank, but the late '90s Passat TDI had a bigger tank, and there were people who got over 1,200 miles per tank with those.
