Wouldn't a 3 speed defeat the goal of hyper-efficiency at 84mpg? Can't cut out the high gears for that reason, and cant cut out the low ones. Unless it was geared to be similar to 1-3-5 of a car transmission, but I can't imagine THAT would be a smooth ride!

When I had the Gold Wing 1000cc the automatic transmission was very very smooth and in the mid 1970s that bike got about 40 Mpg.

I remain optimistic that 2015 will be the year I get to drive off in my Elio. I have been holding off on purchasing a new vehicle since putting my money down. I currently drive a 2007 Honda Civic coupe and love almost everything about it. It's not a fast car but then again I am no longer built for speed if you know what I mean. My plan is to purchase a portable garage for my Elio (7 X 16 enclosed trailer) and pull it behind my motorhome. I plan on doing two week stops at various camp grounds throughout the country and after setting up camp using my Elio to explore the local attractions. I would also like to do a complete Route 66 trip. Anyone interested in forming a caravan to a trip across the country? Sure is nice to dream, isn't it?
We'd be up for it but the wife still has 4 years to retirement. After that, look out world, we're on the loose!;)

Well, we have entered the year 2015. If all works correctly we should be seeing our first Elios off the production line this year. Everyone keep their fingers crossed. This is as exciting as my Christmas expectation when I believed in Santa.

Enjoy the ride. Savor the experience.
I will enjoy the ride. I drive a truck for a living about 200 miles a day. And my commute to work in my car is almost 50 miles one way. And I have a Harley Davidson that The wife and I ride all over. Been to Sturgis South Dakota 8 times and I ride all the way. So looking forward to my Elio.
