It has the potential to eliminate DUI arrests.
The technology is easy. Making it organizational-proof (software or map fails) and answering issues like the above, those are the real problems with it.

I would say, DUI's would go down but drug and alcohol use would go way-way up. ( if the laws gave a loop hole for no-legal-driver-required )
I have to drive my wife to the doctor multiple times per month. She'd LOVE to be able to go alone and not have to take a taxi. It would be a super-boon for people like her.

Still, pursuing the possibilities, what does Apple want in the car business?

I wonder, some say, all cars will be networked. What would you do with all that? What would you LIKE to do?
I greatly prefer my hands free blue-tooth connection to any hands-on cell phone use.
I suspect I would want to text, without actually texting. How about a verbal internet, search, read pages, text, email, all verbally.
So is Apple looking at simply a glorified sound-box, or serious hands free internet and ipad( idrive ) with all the garnishments and apps to boot?

OR will there be a VR display that tells you info about everything you drive by, or want to drive by?
If I had constant internet on the road, I might like to stream my drive experience onto the 'cloud', edit it then post to youtube.

Food for thought.:D

The first generation of self driving vehicle systems are actually in use right now in the form of adaptive cruise control systems. These systems use sensors to determine the distance to the vehicle in front and slow the vehicle down and/or speed up automatically as necessary to maintain a constant safe distance. These systems are now widely available as an option on vehicles $25K-$40K and quickly becoming a standard accessory on vehicles $40K+.

The wide scale adoption of this technology means that, whether or not you have one installed in your vehicle, your safety is already dependent on these systems working properly as the person behind you could very well be using one of these systems and you have no way of knowing or doing anything about it.

More: I think this is conjecture more than fact...
The Cupertino, Calif., company has several hundred employees working secretly toward creating an Apple-branded electric vehicle, according to people familiar with the matter. The project, code-named “Titan,” initially is working on the design of a vehicle that resembles a minivan, one of the people said.

There is more potential and less risk in a product line for all cars versus making your own car. But what do I know?
Apple has been working with auto makers on bringing its software expertise into the car. More than two dozen auto makers plan to use its CarPlay service, which allows a driver to access Apple services like iTunes music, maps and Siri through the vehicle’s dashboard information system
