I had a car while at University that had no functional speedometer. I drove it for 2 years, and not once did I really worry about it. It's surprisingly easy to gauge your speed once you've driven a few years. Drove past many many speed traps and never once worried about being pulled over. And I'm not known for holding up traffic.

Since the Elgin instrument cluster isn't a COTS item, I can't imagine that it costs less than the great majority of COTS solutions available. Perhaps there will be at least one optional cluster offered at no additional cost. Something with physical or virtual needles that can be scanned very quickly. Elio Motors, are you listening?
