I'm not sure the article is correct about that. When I asked Elio execs about why 65,000 I was told it was arbitrary but expedient: they need to prove a level of commitment, and they need to do it now. They do not expect that all 65,000 reservation holders will sign commitment letters, though that would be great. So 65,000 is not in itself the holy grail. It's just a short-term number, not so very hard to reach in the near future.

Possible the 85mpg is a typo, but it's also possible that they got some additional info out of EM. And a typo in one of the few numbers in an article that is targeted at engineers and is otherwise extremely accurate seems unlikely.
