People have been hyping algae-based fuel production for decades, and that's not an exaggeration. I have National Geographic articles from the mid-90s that talked about it.
We have large algae ponds here in southern New Mexico and they continue to expand.

Interesting!.
Along highway 8, south of Phoenix, huge amounts of Solar farms. Still looking at Satellite images, just a drop in the bucket of available arid land here in AZ.
As these things make money, they will just silently expand.

There are a few research algae ponds near the Las Cruces Airport but the majority of the larger ponds are near Deming and they continue to expand

A scientist on the Eastern Shore of Maryland was working with some sort of plant grows in swamp water that could be turned into an efficient biofuel and restore wetlands at the same time.

I know all the chicken farms over there use their chicken poo as bio-fuel now
