I'm no engineer and this is totally speculation. I think for stability, since there's only on wheen in the back, that a wide front was needed. I see videos of older 3 wheelers and they are bad when it comes to tipping over during tight turns. A wide front and a low center of gravity makes it much more stable.
Yes, stability. Three wheelers need a bit more width to retain the same anti-roll-over as a four wheeler. It's pretty easy to see when you draw a polygon from each wheel where it contacts the ground, and consider the height of the center of gravity. Just make a simple scale wire model of that (simple triangles) and see how hard it is to tip each model over. The model of an SUV will be easier to tip over than the Elio if you correctly position the CG height.

Since the Elio has these outrigger wheels, more width is not much dis-benefit to aerodynamics. In fact once an outrigger is too close, it messes with the aerodynamics at the main body's surface. Of course enclosed fenders would be a completely different evaluation.

Too much information? Typically, yes, that's me!

Okay, CompTrex if you really want that barn and tractor here's what you need to do.
You: Honey, I want to build a barn.
Wife: Why?
You: I know you love (horses, cows, pigs, goats chickens pick one you'll know she'll love) and if we had a barn, you could get some. They do need a place to stay safe and warm!
Wife: Oh honey I love you, yes you can build a barn!
You: Okay I'll be back in a bit.
Wife: Where are you going?
You: To buy a tractor.
Wife: Why do you need a tractor?
You: To build your barn, I can't clear the area, dig the holes for footing, raise the timbers by my self, now can I?
Wife: Oh, I guess not, okay. Wait where will you keep the tractor?
You: In the barn of course you won't need the whole thing for your animals, will you?
Wife: Oh I guess not.
Two years tops the whole barn is yours!

Well thought out! Nice. Ironically, I brought up pigs (at the dinner table ;)) last night. It didn't go over well.

Ah yes..
Or the inevitable, "Look at the money I saved on these by buying one and getting the 2nd half off!" "But you only needed one."... "Yes, but the.. money..I saved..."
That one has never worked for me. In fact I will frequently resist buying the one I wanted/needed because that kind of "sale" price pisses me off so much. Two for one I'll go for. Buy one and get the other for 1/2 off - forget it! :-) Z
