The fenders of the Elio are one example of improvements we have made throughout the process to maximize the vehicle’s overall mileage.

Along our journey, the fenders of the Elio have improved with each iteration of the vehicle to help us reach our goal of 84 MPG on the highway.

Fending for Mileage
by The Elio Team

The Elio Motors project is driven by four central tenets: ultra-high gas mileage, unbeatable base price, unparalleled safety, and an unwavering commitment to producing an American vehicle and creating American jobs. In terms of our mileage goals, our configuration acts as an excellent starting point. To achieve our desired gas mileage our engineers have scoured every inch of the vehicle looking for ways to enhance the Elio’s fuel economy.
Throughout the process, we have made slight enhancements to the vehicle to incrementally improve the efficiency of the vehicle. The fenders of the Elio are one example of improvements we have made throughout the process to maximize the vehicle’s overall mileage.Along the journey, the fenders have improved on each iteration of the vehicle to help us reach our goal of 84 MPG on the highway. For example, the P3 was equipped with fenders similar to those found on the Plymouth Prowler. The P4 was the first prototype that showcased full-shirt fenders. The current design of the fenders offers even better aerodynamics.

While the standard fenders are a meaningful factor in the vehicle’s overall mileage, it is also an area of the vehicle that is ripe for customization. We plan on offering several different fender options, including those found on previous prototypes.

Any fender available as an option will understandably have an effect on the vehicle’s fuel economy. The optional fenders are purely cosmetic and will have an impact on overall mileage.

Many future Elio owners have voiced an interest in purchasing several different fenders, presumably for different times of year. As we mentioned before, we do plan on offering several different fender styles. For future owners that plan on changing out their fenders on a regular basis, there will be no need to take your Elio into an Elio Motors retail center or to a mechanic. All it will take to change the fenders is a wrench to remove four bolts and the fenders will easily come off. Elio owners will have a multitude of different fenders to choose from and be able to easily change them.

I sort of feel sorry for the blog writers. They must have a list of topics they can and can't talk about. It seems all they can talk about are the design considerations, but not if anything is beyond prototype stage. The fenders for instance. Is the current design final or not? In essence, they are just telling us that if ever produced, it might look something like this. Unfortunately I think we will not get anything really new, information wise, until financing is resolved. Until they can actually tell us something, I would suggest they cut back on the communications to just once a week. That will spread their topics to talk about into a longer time frame.

Reference the infamous test drive detachment of the left front fender assembly on NYC streets:

Way back when the Tour Team still existed, I asked specifically about that incident, and was informed that the fenders on the P5 were not designed to have anything close to a production-ready mounting arrangement. The P5 had been designed as a show car to be paraded around to raise money and interest at tour stops. That being the case, the P5 was intended to spend a lot of time being trailered, involving repeated loading and unloading in/out of a trailer in oftentimes precariously tight spaces (say, curbside in NYC). The design engineers crafted the fenders with a sort of quick-release or one-touch mounting mechanism to expedite the on/off transition time.

That's all fine and good, but YouTube videos live in infamy and nobody ever bothers to consider appropriate context before passing judgment. I agree the optics are horrible at first glance, but the fender booboo never phased me since I understood that a production-ready Elio would have fenders that are more securely attached to the outrigger assemblies than a prototype intended for show purposes.
