Tesla: New feature enables car to drive itself through a parking lot to pick you up

This week, Tesla is rolling out a feature that could sound like a dream come true for anyone who forgets where they parked their car in the parking lot.

The feature, which Tesla calls Enhanced Summon, lets drivers remotely call their car to drive itself through a parking lot to pick them up, so long as it's within 150 feet, according to Tesla.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted Saturday that the feature, which has already been available in beta for some Tesla drivers, will be available within the week for any US Tesla owners who sprung for the Enhanced Autopilot, or "Full Self-Driving," package (which adds an additional $5,000 to the overall cost of each car).

With Enhanced Summon, users will actually be able to tap a button in the Tesla mobile app to summon the vehicle. The Tesla will drive on its own through a parking lot, maneuvering around objects in its path, toward its owner.

The Tesla user will have the option of either selecting the "Find Me" option, which will bring the car directly to the owner using GPS, or they can drop a pin at a nearby location (again, in either case, the owner or the chosen location must be within 150 feet of where the Tesla is parked).

So he's trying to put valet parking out of business too? Could a Tesla get confused with a traffic jam, thinking it's a parking lot? I also wonder if Tesla will add a self park feature too. Seems silly to only offer half what the situation requires. Now it may be interesting if the Tesla could drive itself to the nearest supercharger, charge up, and return.

Seems silly to only offer half what the situation requires. Now it may be interesting if the Tesla could drive itself to the nearest supercharger, charge up, and return.

THAT would be pretty handy. It could drop you off at work, go home to charge, pick up groceries (Walmart does that curb-side shopping where you don't have to get out of your car), pick you up at work, and then whisk you home. Sure, dropping you off at work effectively doubles the amount of traffic you are contributing each day but if you and your wife had different times you had to be at work, it could conceivably drop you off and then her... reversing the procedure in the afternoon. If there were an appointment during the day, it could go back to whoever needs the car next and park in the parking lot waiting to take you to your appointment. Pretty neat concept.

....flies me from my garage and serves me a hot meal while in flight to my destination and back! Those that can't embrace the future lives underground and are called Mole people.........wait, I've seen this movie before! People above ground wear same clothes, they all thinks the same (brainwashed) and rebels below ground band together to fight the super computer!

Big question is when 2 Teslas find the same parking space in the lot. What determines who gets the spot?

I have a guess. I bought one of these before Christmas but found this video when they battle for the charger. With these, the go to find the charger when their battery is running low. It gave me an idea, The Tesla should park in a charger spot and have it hook up just like the Vector. That way, it charges on it's own when you are eating dinner.

Another situation: A large ballpark, the game is over, and a bunch of Tesla owners all request their cars at the same time. Should be an interesting traffic jam. My guess is that the Tesla's will talk with each other and determine by time stamp the order they arrive in. I wonder how the owners will determine who's Tesla is who's when they all arrive together. With Tesla only having a couple of colors available, it may take a while to sort things out. Wonder if there will be any actual time savings?

I plan to try this feature out... but since the range is only 150 feet... it’s probably just as easy to walk to the car.

Actually, not much of a timesaver... it doesn’t take much time to walk 150 feet...

It will only retrieve the car...not self park it...
