April 20th: Happy Easter or Hitler's birthday, which ever way you want to go....:loco:
I admit I was very worried about 4-19, this year. I kept watch on the internet for the next world wide attack or something to happen. I was so expecting THE attack. I am a bit relieved, this being Wednesday, the stock market is recovering from everybody else expecting doom and gloom. I slipped in some money into my stock stand-by account, just to be ready. Well, the money sits, goat is doing well, chickens are at 95 percent, every freezer, cupboard, barn, closest and drawer is still at full Y2K preparedness. Our youth is poisoned, we have given our higher learning over to the Chinese, our air water and land is in the toilet. So, I am standing steady. It's not going to be fun. But, I'm ready. Your lord has risen. Let us see what he can do with this.

Don't worry, 4-20 is national pot day. So it all worked out.

Since this is the "odds and ends" section of the forum, I hope its OK to post a computer related question.

Support for Windows 10 is ending in October and I'm wondering what other people on the forum are doing for this event.

Personally, I do my banking, etc. on line -- so I do need something that is secure and will receive updates, etc.

I think my plan is to purchase a refurbished Windows 11 machine, as I don't need anything high-end, just strong enough to run a browser and do a few spreadsheets.

I'm toying with the idea of playing with Linux. I'm intrigued by the idea of divorcing myself from Windows completely. Are there any Linux users on the forum?? Do you like it?? Do you feel it is secure?? Opinions?? Thoughts??

Thank you in advance.
I have been running Linux since windows XP was phased out. Several versions are pretty much identical to a windows layout at the front end, so nothing really different there. I run Ubuntu at the moment but am thinking of switching to Mint at some point. I find Ubuntu runs everything my windows machine did with the exception of my HRBlock income tax program. So I keep a dual boot machine around for that, which works fine. I find Linux much more seciure than windows ever could be, I have never even run any antivirus programs on it, even though they are available, it is really only possible to get something through a phishing attack, and even then, at some point, the phish will require you to give your machine password in order to make changes to anything, so its pretty obvious. Only real security threat is "insider attacks" where someone has physical access to your machine. Your can try Ubuntu for free by making a ISO flashdrive and booting from it directly. It runs entirely off the flashdrive and doesnt install to your device at all unless you ask it to. Even then you can choose to retain a windows system and add a linux system so you have both. I currently run that way on my Dell Lattitude.

@Hog Thank you for your response. Yes, I dug out an old 32 bit Athlon Windows XP machine I had in the back of my closet and loaded antiX Linux on it. I figure I'll try to learn some basics on that computer as I really don't care about it and if I really mess it up, I haven't lost anything. I'm trying to teach myself some terminal commands "sudo apt" and others. It kind of reminds me of the days when I used to write batch files in DOS.

The one thing I did wrong (on the old Athlon machine) was I didn't set up a "SWAP" partition. So I think I want to teach myself how to do that properly, before I try to load Linux on my Windows 10 machine. I was leaning towards Linux Mint as I heard that one was the easiest to learn.

Do you use "Libreoffice" for your spreadsheets and word processing?? Do you like it?? Opinions??
